By applying the design methodical tools, the authors of the exhibition "Modern in Belgrade" innovatively present selected architectural works and spatial ambiances created during the Cold War period on the territory of Belgrade. The exhibition summarizes the results of a long-term research of the authors in the domain of visual representation of the post-war modernist heritage of Belgrade architecture. The aim of the exhibition is to contribute to the understanding of canonical architectural designs and constructions and their roles in a wider socio-political, economic and cultural context as a critical instrument for reflection and production of contemporary space.
The exhibition is designed as a synchronized overview of individual graphic and spatial simulations - the author works of team members. Each simulation is a set of architectural representations of selected cases. Although the visual identities of individual contributions differ from one another, depending on the author's approach and the subject of the research, they are united by the methodology of visual representation, that is the graphical narrative. The authors use various models of graphic narratives, such as .gif format, comics, flip-books, and the like, to illustrate the architectural heritage of Belgrade and bring less known information and architectural trivia to the general public. The artistic freedom of the authors, on the other hand, often involve a speculative and fictitious way of re-interpreting the social, cultural and aesthetic aspects of selected architectural works and spatial ambiences. The accent of the exhibition is also on the contemporary interpretation and digitalisation of artistic representation within the framework of architectural discourse.
The project Modern in Belgrade (MuBGD) brings together a group of architects (Iva Bekić, Irena Gajić, Dalia Dukanac, Stefan Đorđević, Snežana Zlatković, Mirjana Ješić, Hristina Stojanović, Petar Cigić) with special interest and engagement in the fields of illustration, graphic design and visual arts. Together they launched the MuBGD platform in order to promote, as well as to critically analyze the architectural heritage of Belgrade through innovative graphic representations.
