The European Prize for Urban Public Space is a biennial competition organized by Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), recognizing projects that create, recover, or enhance public spaces in European cities. Over time, the Prize has contributed to a deeper understanding of the value of high-quality public space for cities, their citizens, and overall living conditions. While planners and architects have traditionally focused on design, the inclusion of broader social, environmental, and cultural criteria has made the evaluation process increasingly complex and meaningful.
The Prize offers a unique perspective rooted in our immediate reality, contributing to a wider debate on the future of cities—an issue of growing importance in an increasingly urbanized world facing new and complex natural and man-made challenges. Urban interventions, regardless of scale, ultimately aim to improve everyday urban life and citizens’ well-being. Priority is given to projects with a strong social and climate-aware dimension, rather than those driven solely by aesthetic or iconic ambitions.
The long-term involvement of our panelists in the nomination and selection processes across Europe provides valuable insights that can inform the planning and design of public spaces in our own cities. Particular attention will be given to the evaluation process itself, the challenges faced by a multidisciplinary and multinational jury, and the presentation of this year’s candidates from Serbia.
