Modern solutions for the restoration of cultural heritage and public buildings
Zadužbina Ilije M. Kolarca, one of the most significant cultural monuments in Serbia, is undergoing a process of renovation and upgrading of its spaces after more than six decades, with the technical support and expertise of Mapei.
The collaboration, initiated in 2023 during the reconstruction of the Gallery of Fine Arts, has continued through a shared understanding of the institution’s importance, both for individuals and for society as a whole. In this process, modern construction materials and systems are used with the aim of preserving authenticity while simultaneously enhancing functionality and durability.
Mapei and the Zadužbina Ilije M. Kolarca are now connected through a partnership approach to the restoration of cultural heritage, where advanced construction solutions are applied in service of preserving and enhancing historically significant spaces.
Kolarac is not only an architectural building, but a symbol of culture, knowledge, and public good. Its restoration therefore requires a careful balance between preserving historical identity and adapting to the needs of contemporary users. The technical interventions include structural repair and protection, and the application of finishing systems that meet high aesthetic and functional standards.
The experience Mapei has built through projects worldwide – from Teatro alla Scala in Milan, to Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris – confirms that innovation and tradition are not opposites, but together shape a sustainable future.
In this spirit, the story of the Kolarac restoration project will be shared with participants of this year’s seminar as an example of how modern solutions can preserve what is valuable and make it accessible to future generations.
