A New Life of MODERNISM – From Idea to Realisation

The seminar intended for both professional and wider public, would be dedicated to consideration of the concepts of methodology and valorisation, as well as to experiences of reconstruction and renewal of architectural units and structures of the 20^th century. In the contemporary context, we often face a lack of understanding for the quality and significance of the buildings erected in this period and, consequently, need of their preservation as cultural heritage, and also – in case this phase is reached – problems in selecting the adequate approach and methodology for the renewal of structures from this period.

The seminar is conceived so as to present experiences and challenges of renewing such structures abroad, shared by highly active and renowned experts: Wessel de Jonge (TU Delft, Netherlands). On the other hand, the experiences of renewing structures of different types realised in recent years in Belgrade will also be presented: Complex of Zvezdara Observatory, Central Tower at Staro Sajmište, BIGZ Building, Sava Centre and Prendić Villa. These projects will be discussed by the national experts who participated in their realisation: Dušica Totić and Marko Korošec (Remorker), Ivana Letić (Delta Real Estate), Danilo Dangubić (Danilo Dangubic Architects), Aleksandra Šević (Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Belgrade) and company Koto.

Special attention will be dedicated to the problem of preservation of the Belgrade Fair complex (Jelica Jovanović, Docomomo Serbia), Generalštab (Tanja Conley, Docomomo Serbia) and Hotel Yugoslavia (Nebojša Antešević), which has been internationally recognised as a pioneering endeavour in architecture and civil engineering of the mid-20^th Century through the discussion of Tanja Conley and Wesel de Jong and public.
