Invited participants will present their experience and work highlighting and discussing the meaning of excellence in the profession embodied in the The Grand Architecture Lifetime Achievement Award (1982-2024) of the Association of Architects of Serbia. With enviable continuity, this award plays a role in the affirmation and promotion of architectural discourse in Serbia, offering some of the conditions for the development of architectural criticism. By recognizing and rewarding outstanding professional achievements, not only are individuals recognized, but standards of excellence are set in the architectural profession. In this way, the awarding process encourages a critical reflection on values, aesthetic and functional criteria, as well as on the social significance of architecture, inspiring younger generations to develop their contributions standing on the shoulders of their predecessors, building their practice on the basis of knowledge already gained through previous generations. Thus, this award, through continuity and exclusivity, functions as a tool for value orientation of the wider architectural community. By highlighting the awards, we make it possible to focus on certain periods, approaches and projects, thus forming a new type of “knowledge” built by Serbian architecture.
