What sparked the momentum of cooperative housing in Barcelona?

The breathtaking emergence of Barcelona’s community-led, cooperative housing initiatives has recently taken many of us by surprise, simultaneously providing inspiration and shedding light on how housing can have its community’s needs at its core.
While new architectural landmarks, such as La Borda (winner of the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022), have flooded the architecture magazines and attracted international attention, the remarkable level of community-driven process and innovation behind them has remained less visible.
In this event, at the Цenter for New Cooperative Housing in Belgrade, we will hold a conversation with architect Lali Daví, one of the forerunners of the Barcelona’s new cooperative housing wave, to unravel the processes behind it. We will discuss the exciting shift in the architect’s role: from designing buildings to becoming the co-initiators and facilitators of intricate communal processes. In just a couple of years, the new cooperative movement has resulted in numerous new cooperative buildings and more resilient, healthier living communities. This talk uncovers the largely unseen elements contributing to the success of this approach, while also anticipating changes that may shape our local professional landscape in the years to come.
