The seminal book The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses, written by Juhani Pallasmaa, a Finnish architect and theorist, was translated and released by Atelje A22 in 2023. This book, which was first published in 1996 and subsequently underwent numerous reprints, questions the dominance of the sense of sight in architectural design, and explores the multisensory dimensions of the architectural experience. Over time, becoming a key reading in the domain of the phenomenological understanding of architecture, Eyes of the Skin offers readers a deep insight into the essence of the art of construction.
Palasmaa takes the reader on a journey through space, time and matter, emphasizing, through different prisms of art, philosophy and everyday life, the importance of emotional and sensory experience in architecture. The author reminds us that architecture is not only a visual experience, but a complex fabric of living experience that implies our deep emotional relationship with the entire environment.
Juhani Palasmaa is one of the most influential and widely read living writers on architecture. He is the author of numerous books and professional articles in the field of architectural theory. He has been a member of numerous juries around the world, including the jury for the Pritzker Prize (2008–2014). He received numerous national and international awards. He holds honorary doctorates from six universities. He is an honorary member of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
