More than a decade has passed since the monuments from the former Yugoslavia came to the attention of the international public after the publication of Jan Kempenaers’ book “Spomenik”. The publication of Kempernaes’ book coincided with the increase in the availability of the Internet, which made the monuments a global sensation that has not waned to this day, but only changes its form and receives new interpretations. What does this precisely mean for the monuments and the communities in which they are located, is it possible and in what way to convey their message today in the context of historical revisionism, how to fight with the narratives about maintenance and sustainability? The walk takes us to various urban and rural contexts: the Kragujevac October Memorial Park in Šumarice in Kragujevac, the Popina Memorial Park, the Struggle and Victory Memorial Park in Čačak, the Slobodište Memorial Park in Kruševac and the Bubanj Memorial Park in Niš. Walking through some of the most famous and beautiful monument complexes in Serbia, we will talk about their origin, authors, contexts in which they were created, experience decay, and regain modern glory.
