The Urban Oasis implemented in 2024 represents an example of a dynamic and productive relationship between the local community, marginalised group(s) and professionals, as well as the link between the international and local level of action since it was supported by the EUNIC Serbia (European Union National Institutes for Culture), Goethe-Institut, Belgrade International Week of Architecture (BINA), Center for Youth Integration, Italian Institute of Culture and the Embassy of Portugal. The design process included a group of the second-year undergraduate students of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, which took into consideration the participatory input of both the direct users and the local community, activating and upgrading a small open space. The resulting urban oasis has become a specific node of social inclusion, safety, inter-neighbourhood interaction, while increasing both the environmental awareness and the quality of space. Emphasising its importance as a common good, the Urban oasis 1 has been shaped to stimulate exploration, play and learning through the elements of art, ecology and recycling. Becoming a popular place, this node further develops its sustainability through new activities and initiatives conducted in 2025, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut.
